How Your Home Measures Up

Compare your home inspection to that data developed from a HouseMaster Home Defect Survey* based on a sample size of homes inspected by HouseMaster inspectors throughout North America. HouseMaster is the most experienced name in home inspections with 40 years experience and more than 3 million homes inspected.

All homes are subject to ongoing wear and tear. Rarely is a home all good or all bad. Age can play a role in the condition of many elements in the home. Use the drop down on the right to identify your home’s age and view the frequency of common conditions based on a survey of HouseMaster Home Inspections.

The age groups for the homes in this survey represent general time frames when some significant changes in home design or materials occurred. As you might expect, newer homes generally experience the fewest problems; however, the survey does point out some areas where concerns may arise even in newer homes. Homes that are about 20-25 years of age can sometimes have a disproportionate need for major work if the need for replacement of the components that have a 10 or 20 year service life happen to all occur at the same time. While the expression “they don’t build them like they used to” has some truth to it, older homes generally have more repair needs. But in some cases, they may actually do better than mid-age homes because at some point in time, due to the overall aging and wear of components, a major renovation and updating occurred. The occurrence of deficiencies in any category will vary depending on the house design, climatic conditions, and other factors that are not represented in the results presented here. *The survey was based on homes inspected in 2015 and included defects over $500 to correct or that represented a significant concern for safety or functionality. **The occurrence of deficiencies in any category will vary depending on the house design, climatic conditions, and other factors that are not represented in the results presented here.
